St. Joseph’s Cord (available from Sr. Cora, email as above)

St. Joseph’s Cord originated in Antwerp, Belgium in 1657 with the miraculous cure  of a nun named Sr. Elizabeth. After a severe and painful illness which lasted about three years, the medical doctors had given up hope of curing her and expected her to die soon. But Sr. Elizabeth, having always been devoted to St. Joseph, made a cord with pure cotton, had it blessed in St. Joseph’s honour and wore it around her waist. A few days later when praying before a statue of St. Joseph she was suddenly freed from pain. Her recovery was considered miraculous. Eventually devotion to the cord spread and numerous special graces were obtained through its devout use. The Cord should be of thread or cotton, with seven knots at one end and worn around the waist. It is blessed by a priest. The Gory be is sais seven times daily if possible in honour of the seven joys and sorrows of St. Joseph.

The Cord was used not only as a remedy for physical ailments, but also as a spiritual aid to preserve the virtue of purity. The devotion was approved by the Sacred Congregation of Rites on Sep. 19, 1859 and it was also bless and approved by Pope Pius IX. Graces obtained by wearing this Cord are

  1. St. Joseh’s special protection.
  2. Purity of soul
  3. Thrace of Chastity
  4. Final perseverance
  5. Particular assistance at the hour of death
